Manchester City Council - Cost of living advice line

If you are struggling with the increases in food and energy bills and are struggling financially, help is available.

This free telephone line offers support with:

Benefits and help with your rent
Advice about debt and paying bills 
Food support – help to find community food provision near you
Help to get online - support to access the internet, laptops, phones and data.

Neighbourhood Winter Support Booklets

Teams around the Neighbourhood and the voluntary sector have worked together to produce a series of A4 booklets, which outline the hyper-local support available in neighbourhoods. These include food banks, warm hubs, befriending services and other offers.

There are 11 booklets (which can be downloaded below) covering all areas of the city. The booklets complement the citywide support available through the Manchester City Council cost of living advice line 0800 023 2692 and online web page www.manchester.gov.uk/coladvice, offering support with benefits, rent, debt, food and digital exclusion.

Warm Spaces

Every library in Manchester is a ‘warm space’, a free, safe place where residents can come in and stay warm all day in a welcoming, inclusive environment. Our libraries are packed full of resources and support for all ages:

Free, self-service hot drinks
Comfortable seating and welcoming spaces
Free Internet
Free Wi-Fi
Newspapers

Information and advice
Staff who can signpost to other support agencies
Digital drop-ins one day a week
Under 5s story times once a week at 11am (ask your local library for more details).

Nearly 3000 registered organisations have opened free, warm, welcoming spaces for the public this winter across the UK. You can use this Warm Welcome Interactive Map to find your nearest warm space, including libraries and other spaces in Manchester and further afield.

Free School Meals

Who is eligible?

Your child may qualify for free school meals if you get any of the following:

Income Support
Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
The guaranteed part of Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit (as long as your annual gross income is £16,190 or less and you don’t get Working Tax Credit)
Working Tax Credit run-off after you come off Working Tax Credit
Universal Credit that you applied for on, or after, 1 April 2018. As long as your household income is less than £7,400 a year after tax, not including any benefits
